About
  • Do not use tapes – adhesives will fail with constant moisture exposure.
  • Each kit contains 2 – 1.5″ wide x 10-gauge (3.5mm) thick Stainless Steel straps and hardware.
  • Method for clamping barrier together when making an enclosure

Our kit is comprised of stainless steel materials (including the hardware) to prevent rust. Deterioration is the main reason for failure in a subterranean environment. Stainless steel is superior to other metals and materials.

Installing corrosion-resistant material is essential to protect your investment. Wood rots quickly, and concrete will eventually crack. Bamboo Shield, combined with our securing kit, is the optimal solution for long-term containment.

How to Install

Bamboo Shield contains running bamboo by blocking its shallow rhizomes — and it goes in over a single afternoon.

  1. Mark the line. Decide exactly where the bamboo may grow — a straight screen, a curve, or a full enclosure.
  2. Dig a trench along that line, about 28″ deep. Bamboo roots live in the top ~14″ of soil, so the barrier only has to go a little deeper.
  3. Stand the barrier vertically in the trench, leaving 2–3″ above grade so surface rhizomes can't climb over the top.
  4. Overlap and clamp the ends so no root can slip through the seam.
  5. Backfill and tamp. That's it — one afternoon for decades of worry-free containment.

FAQs

Will it stop the bamboo completely?

Yes — when it's installed deep enough and a few inches stay above grade so rhizomes can't crest the top edge. Trim back any stray shoot that tries to surface right along the barrier.

How deep do I install it?

About 28″, with 2–3″ left above the soil line. Bamboo roots run shallow — in the top ~14″ — so you don't need to dig to China.

Which thickness should I choose?

A heavier (thicker-mil) barrier for vigorous runners and aggressive clumpers; the standard mil handles most temperate running bamboo.

Which barrier size do I need?

Match the barrier to your climate and your bamboo's mature height. When in doubt, size up.

Climate zone Bamboo height Minimum barrier
Zones 4–7 Under 25 ft tall 60 mil × 24 in deep
Zones 7–8 Over 25 ft tall 80 mil × 30 in deep
Zones 9–10+ Over 25 ft tall 100 mil × 36 in deep
