Characteristics of Chusquea gigantea
Chusquea gigantea is a clumping bamboo. Newer introduced species from Central and South America. It forms slightly open clumps making it a more effective screening bamboo than most clumpers. Clumping bamboo typically presents in an inverted cone or “V” shape appearance. The slightly open clump allows the Chusquea gigantea to become more vertical in nature providing better screening without gaps. It provides the best of both worlds. It screens like running bamboo but stays in place like clumping bamboo.
Chusquea also have one dominant branch with multiple other smaller complimentary branchlet per nodes. This allows this genus to have more foliage than the more common Phyllostachys genus. Another important aspect of the great screening ability of this species.
