New bamboo in Wisconsin 2005

Below is a 2 gallon Phyllostachys rubromarginata shipped to Mike. He potted the bamboo into a 5 gallon container and will keep it inside until Spring. He already grows bamboo and will be planting this outside to start a new grove. While this species does very well in USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer, it has been proven to be hardy enough for zones 5. Now with bamboo growers such as Mike pushing the envelope, we will learn how this very tough bamboo adjust to harsh winters of zone 4 with temperatures dropping to -20 degrees F. or colder.
