Hello Rachel,

This is my e-mail following up on our phone conversation from Wednesday afternoon.  I received my six golden bamboo plants on May 5 and 7 and planted them per your website's instructions the evening of the 7th.  Four have done well with three experiencing new culms.  Two have lost all of their leaves and turned brown and brittle.  I am attaching some photos.  If they can survive and start new shoots, I would keep them but if they are dead, I would like replacement plants.  Please e-mail me or call me at xxx with your advice.

Thank you,

Van

Roger,

It stayed pretty cold today, so we were able to get some more nice photos.  This was a very wet heavy snow which has some of the Rubro plants totally bent over.  I know they’ll be fine though.  This snow was unusually heavy, bringing down some little branches from the big trees as well.  In a couple of photos you’ll see an example of how nicely the Rubro is doing. This particular division in the photo put up several new shoots which is amazing considering that it was planted at the end of June this year.  The next couple of days the temperatures are supposed to moderate and more rain is predicted for Wednesday.

We’ll let you know well in advance about our trip.  We decided to take our own vehicle because I wasn’t thrilled about renting a truck and bouncing around in it for 15+ hours.  I figure if 4 greyhounds can fit in the back, a substantial amount of plants could fit in there too.  There is a lot of room when the seats are down.  We both are very enthusiastic about seeing your groves.

Will be interesting to see how the weather plays out this winter.  Hopefully will continue to have the regular beneficial precipitation we’ve been having.

Roger,

Here is a picture of a bamboo I think I bought from you this spring. About four to six weeks after it was planted it grew the second culm. It is not a lot higher than the first culm but it is twice as thick. I was prepared to wait three years to see anything. I thought you would like to see how beautiful it is.

Thanks for a great product.

Maxine,

It is always good to hear right back from a new 'bambuseros' and we are happy the bamboo arrived safely. It should do great, just remember that it will take a few years to really take off! You may or may not see a lot of growth above ground the first couple of years; it all depends on the species and your location. All the main growth is going to be underground and you will not see much activity for the first few years, and then look out!!

We try to make everyone happy and it is really nice to get your email. We have customer comment page   http://www.lewisbamboo.com/customercomments.html
that with your permission we would love to include your email. No full names are used so your privacy is intact. Just email us back if that is ok, but either way we are very happy your bamboo is to your satisfaction.

Thanks again keep them watered well for the next month.

Open-mouthed smiley emoticon  Hello,

My black bamboo just came, and it's absolutely beautiful!  I was impressed with how large and healthy it was.  There are so many new, little leaves on it.  My UPS guy was here for awhile because he was so interested in it--he may soon be a customer, too.

It's already planted in a sunny area (enriched with organic matter) and has been well-watered.  It can spread all it wants as it matures!   I've not had very good luck with other companies that ship plants.  But yours was an A+++

Many thanks,

I received my bamboo plants today. They are absolutely beautiful. I plan to grow them in very large pots and care for them exactly as instructed on your website, then transplant them in the Spring on my 33 acres.
I want to thank you for such a detailed and very informative website. It helped me a lot considering I never knew there was hardy Bamboo that would tolerate our winter weather in Ohio until I stumbled across your website.

Thank you very much for the great packaging, safe arrival of my new "green" plants.

weeks ago I noticed a new shoot at the base of one of them, and now 3

of them have anywhere from 2-6 new shoots at the base. I consider

this amazing, since I wasn't expecting anything until spring, except

adaptation to new surroundings. So, I'm impressed with these healthy

I used 45 mil pond rubber to contain it but after installing it straight up the sides and filling the hole, I read it should have been slanted a bit.  Will it be ok or do I need to change that?

Thanks for sending me these beautiful plants and I will let you know how they survive in west Michigan where we get large dumps of snow at least once per winter.

Subject: My Red Margin Bamboo after winter.

First of all, let me start off by saying that I purchased this bamboo from you about this time last year.  I got 4 little two gallon plants shipped to me very nicely packed and planted them that day in a sunny area on the farm.  It is in a low area that is pretty well protected from high winds.

I live in Central, KY and it is determined to be a climate zone 6.  After living here 30 years I have seen extreme temperatures of 110F to -24F.  This bamboo seen a high of 99F last summer (record drought) and a low of 3F for about 3 nights straight so last year.  I had to pack water to it many times for its little wilting leaves last summer.
This spring it seems to be full of life!  It has very little winter damage to its leaves and has new ones coming out.  I have already counted about 20 new culms on the way up.  I would like to thank you for your wonderful product as I plan to make another order shortly.  Let me know if my bamboo seems to be doing well.

I am a novice at HTML but I posted the links to the pictures I posted on flickr.  You are welcome to use them on your site any way you wish.  Thanks again.    Logan.

 Customer picture

Roger,

Please extend congrats to your mom & dad on their retirement. I retired in 2006 also and have been busier than ever.

I've attached three photos of the Red Margin that I purchased from you all about this time in 2001.

The Red Margin is behind the garage. One view is from the pool, one from the street, and one from the neighbors driveway.

The other day a neighbor asked me if the noise in the field behind our houses bothered me. I said, "I don't hear it any more. It must be the bamboo.

Good health to your family,

Tim

We get a lot of comments, but this next one was really great to hear what they had to say. It is wonderful when you sell something that can really help people. It was an e-mail with attached pictures and text.

We recently ordered some Moso bamboo from you, and my husband had

mentioned to you that we believe that our Golden Bamboo (from Lewis

Bamboo) had saved our lives in Hurricane Ivan. You requested some

pictures, so here they are.

We had bought some bamboo (back around 2000) with the intention of

creating privacy and a sound-barrier. We planted eight tiny plants,

and everyone in the neighborhood laughed at our sad little twigs.

Just as they say, it slept, crept, and finally leapt. Sadly, we don't

have many before pictures as they were destroyed along with the

computers during the hurricane.

Hurricane Pictures  The morning after the hurricane, we ventured outside to assess the
damage. (Having spent the night up to our waists in storm-surge.) You can see how thick and lush the bamboo had become, and you can also see that it acted as a break for the waves that were rolling in from the sea. The bamboo was the only barrier between us and the sea, as there is a road across the street from us that comes straight from the water and joins the road we live on. It's my belief that had the bamboo not been there, the waves and debris would have smashed into our house.

This is another view from the right side of our property. You can see the debris that is piled up in our front yard. These are all items
that were washed into our property from the homes that were gutted by the hurricane. (Yeah, that's my car in the picture.)
Hurricane Damage

Hurricane damageThe bamboo didn't appreciate all that briny water it had to soak in
all night, so within days it went into some serious stress. This is a
view from our old house, looking towards the road. You can see the
new shoots coming up

This picture was taken earlier this year. The bamboo has recovered to it'ss former glory and is now enclosed in a circular driveway. I have plenty more pictures if you want them. :-)

Lewis Bamboo:
Wow, I haven't needed to talk to you guys in along time...my Rubro is doing great.
I dug a nice a pit around it, got it under control, and have actually been able to successfully transplant rogue runners.  I have shared the wealth with many a friend, planted some at the lake, and even have it out back between my yard and the public walking paths!  All is good!
But, the other day, while driving by and enjoying another neighbor who has bamboo, they had their wood privacy fence down for repair and I could see the bottom of their bamboo....it looked a lot different than mine.  IT WAS ALL THINNED OUT!
Mine has ALL the canes still up that have ever grown, and all bunched together, relly tight like.  Their's is like this on the outside of their fence too.  But, on the inside, it looks as if it was trimmed off, thinned on the inside of the 'bush'...they had canes growing up like only every inch or so, and had it all mulched nicely..it looked really nice and clean, and you could see through the bottom...Have you heard of this?  if this OK?  Will pruning off so many canes hurt the bamboo?  Any benefits?  Any instructions on how to 'thin' it?

I don't want to hurt my bamboo, but the thinned bamboo looked really nice.
Let me know.
thanx,
Ron

Dear Sirs:

Just wanted to drop a line to thank you for the advice on planting you gave to me last year when
I purchased a single division of yellow groove bamboo. Even though I was only buying a single item,
you treated me like I was buying a hundred!

I planted in early August, and was very concerned about the division becoming established before
winter here in North Central Indiana. Even though we had a week of temperatures at and below 10
below zero, it has been growing this spring. I followed your advice of putting composted cow manure
in the planting site, and mulched heavily before winter came. I am happy to report that I now have 7
new canes that have come up, even though the top died to the ground during the winter. Two of the
new canes are a foot away from the mother plant.

Again, thanks for the advice, and I will be moving shortly to a new house where I will need to start
several groves, so you will surely be hearing from again this summer!

Hello Roger Lewis...

I know you are SUPER busy so I will keep it brief... well I tried to anyway.

First, thank you for excellent Bamboo.  I purchased from you Giant Moso,
Gray Henon, and Slender Crookstem in mid June.  They are all doing very well.
The Moso has just exploded from the ground in less than 4 months. It has about
a dozen growing very short culms and looks like a large bush now.  The original
six culms are leaning constantly it has added so many leaves to the branches.
I am seeing radial roots three feet from the center in several directions.  I have
tried Moso from other sources... not good... I hope they survive the winter.
Thank you for providing such great bamboo.  You are truly professionals.

I read your site regularly and look at the photographs.  I actually mirror your site

My neighbors and I are especially impressed with the nigra- looks mighty nice. And thanks for the extra crookstem, it helps fill in where my Moso died off. The attached pictures were taken a week prior to planting the newest batch; there’s still 3 or so inches of mulch and I have to figure a better way to keep the grass down (drip and spray irrigation lines are under the grass).

Hello, Roger

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your company.  When my bamboo arrived I met the UPS lady and helped her haul the boxes into my home. It was yet another miserable 107-degree day and I was astonished to feel heat pulsing out of the handholds of the boxes.  I immediately unpacked and moved them to a shady spot outside and misted them thoroughly several times that day and the following, until the cool of night when I actually put them in the ground.  After they were installed I gave them another thorough soaking.  The leaves were a bit curled and some of the canes had snapped in transit, so the leaves on those parts were dying, but overall I had hope because when I unwrapped the roots I was amazed that despite the brutal heat, the dirt was not yet quite dried out.  I'll admit, I was worried about buying any plants mail-order this time of year, but this made a believer out of me.

One week later they all seem to be doing fine.  The leaves are dark green and flat and they are still getting plenty of water to help them settle in.  I am sure the only reason they did not die in transit was your clever packing methods, and I'd like to thank you for sending them so quickly and with such great care.  My yard is overlooked by the second story of a neighbor on another side, and after this pleasant experience I intend to add bamboo to that area next summer.

You have gained another satisfied and loyal customer!

Roger,

Thanks for the advice in selecting the P. bissetii as the next choice in my bamboo plantings.  I had for some reason thought of it as sort of an also-ran.  What I received is a lovely, bombproof bamboo that will handle anything my climate can dish out with zero difficulty.  The foliage on the bisseti has a slightly different color from the many other bamboo varieties in my collection, as do the culms, and I am very pleased with it.  It already stands out, and I am anxious to see what it will do.  My P. decora is going nuts right now, extremely attractive and growing almost as tall as my "Moso", at least this year.  The "Moso" has really gone crazy, a solid wall nine to 10 feet tall,  and maybe 30 yards wide, from only four 3 gallon plants that experienced topkill their first winter here.  I am hoping they survive southwest Virginia, but there is P. rubromarginata in the wings if they fail.  P. viridis glaucescens is really shooting vigorously just now too.  Thanks again for all you do!

Best,

Mr. Roger,

I came home last evening to a wonderful surprise!  UPS had delivered four boxes that I assumed wouldn’t arrive until today!

The bamboo is beautiful and appears to have traveled quite well.  I put each bagged plant in the bathtub and gave them all a good drink.  There is a great window of glass block there over the tub so they will have good light and moisture until I can get home this evening.

I am so excited!  Thanks so very much for your help!  I’ll keep y’all posted with my progress.

Thanks so much again, Roger!  I just looked, and the P. viridis is shooting today (no shoots visible this am before work,  the first, nice big one this pm; usually about the last in line, at least in my location); one of the P. bambusoides holochrysa also shooting now (two others still sleeping);  The P. aurea "Koi" and "Holochrysa/Golden" have a number of shoots, P. nigras, "Henon" and "Bory" have mutiple shoots; the P. viridis Robert Young has several large shoots also.  P. rubromarginata plants have shoots everywhere, as do the P. aureosulcata "Spectabilis".  The P. decora has a number of remarkably beautiful, big shoots (about 8, I think, first spring on a 3 gallon Lewis transplant).  I've probably forgotten some.  I just love the quality and variety of my Lewis bamboo plants, and your courtesy and service are a breath of fresh air.  There is something uniquely calming and peaceful about bamboo, and it really does enrich my life.   My kids continue to enjoy it and learn from it too.

Thanks again, Roger.  Your family and business deserve your success!

Mr. Lewis,

I have really enjoyed perusing through your website and was just about to make an order for some Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) when I realized that y'all are located in Oakman, Alabama and I will be in that area next week.  I am wondering if there is any chance that it would be convenient for y'all if I visited your bamboo farm next week. If y'all are too swamped with spring shipments, please just say so and I'll understand.  I can simply order the bamboo online.  If there is anyway that you can spare a few minutes, however, that would be incredibly interesting for me I lived in Hawaii for 12 years and visited Japan 4 different years, so I am very interested in Japanese culture - especially Japanese gardens.  I am trying to establish a Zen garden in my backyard here in Maryland. Maryland has a lot of bamboo growing wild in wooded areas and some people have brought in certain varieties, but nothing as magnificent as the Black Bamboo.

Please look at your schedule for next week and let me know if y'all can put up with me for a few minutes.  Again, if y'all are too busy I
certainly understand.  Just let me know either way, if you can, with an email.

Many thanks for all the great information on your website!  The pictures and information are outstanding and much more appealing than any other sites I have visited.

Take care
Allen

We planted our bamboo.  What a huge job, even with the help of George's backhoe. It took us two days.  We replaced most of the soil with compost and top soil and this is what took all of the energy.

Attached is a preliminary photo. I am not much of a photographer but hope you can see how good it looks

Good afternoon Lewis family !!!

Well ... I feel like I have been on a live version of the National Geographic Channel ... where they go into some ancient Egyptian tomb & haul out a mummy to investigate.  That's how it seems when I get a shipment of bamboo from you folks.

How so ??

I got home Thursday night to five cartons [coffins] waiting by my garage [despite the note on the door to put all packages on the front porch.  The UPS drivers seem to have a problem with deliveries which the FedEx fellas don't.  It had rained, but no damage to the cartons or contents].

The cartons are like the mummy's sarcophagus.  In this case, it is breaking into 1/2 inch corrugated cartons, just like the folks on TV getting into the mummy's coffin.  Then comes the unwrapping of the mummy AKA, the wrapped root ball.  Instead of layers of cloth guarding the mummy's body/root ball, its layers of tape, plastic, & newspaper.  [Difference noted that the Egyptians did not have Bruno's plastic bags.  And ... I sure would like to be your tape salesman.]

Finally -- just like on TV -- the exciting "discoveries".  In this case, roots & offshoots hidden & coming up in the dirt.  Got to be careful exposing the mummy ... ah ... root ball.  Have to hold back the excitement & take everything apart slowly.

See ??  Just like on the National Geographic Channel.  But, I had to provide that narration.  Mostly ... "wow".

So ... now all the plants are in the ground & waiting for them to enjoy their new environment.

Thanks once again.  It truly is a pleasure to deal with you folks.

Best wishes,

Bill

I wish I did not have to work tomorrow so I could call and personally thank you for the cool square bamboo section - Moso -  that came in my order.  My 10 year old grabbed it as soon as we opened the box and said he is bringing it to school tomorrow to show the class.  He sometimes tires of "All dad's plants",  but his eyes lit up when he saw this.  He hasn't been this excited about plants since I brought home a 70 lbs bunch of bananas from the greenhouse at the college.

I have to find a way to get down there and visit.  I couldn't possibly come without a flat bed trailer and lots of money though.

Roger,

Just wanted to let you know that I received the Bamboo and am very pleased. It was absolutely beautiful! I hope it all does well in my climate zone. I planted a large Moso by my house out by the pool. The Palmata behind my house. I brought the Spectabilis back to NH and the remainder was all planted on my 100 acres. We had them all planted, Mulched and tied the day after Delivery, which was pretty good considering how big they were.

Your son and his friend were very nice; it was a pleasure to meet them. I do think I gave them a little scare bringing them across the Blue Bridge. It was being repaired and only had one lane open which was a little tight J

I will be emailing soon to have some of your Red Margin mailed to NH that seems to be the best choice for this cold weather. Roger Jr . Seemed surprised about the nice weather when he delivered the Bamboo and thinks it should do well. It was even nicer out the next day. So Tell Roger Jr. and his friend Thanks! For the Bamboo! He even brought me an extra Robert Young, Thanks Again!

Thanks for the wonderful bamboo! It was truly a great experience working with you on my order.  I was treated very graciously and received my order right on time.  I live in north Florida (Monticello near Tallahassee) and have noticed several large groves in my area.  When my wife and I first moved to our property we were surrounded by forest, but in recent years new neighbors have moved in and most recently an adjacent campground cleared property to make way for some storage units.  To say the least it is quite unsightly and has prompted me to look for screening options.

After visiting many bamboo websites and reading up on its growth habits I decided it would be great for a screen.  After finding your web site and perusing the vast amount of information and delightful photos I decided to give you a try.  And I can say I am truly happy with the experience.  All my plants were delivered in great shape with obvious tender care in packaging.

I planted all the bamboo the day I received it following your planting instructions.  I planted the Red Margin in a row to form my screen and one plant had a shoot that I swear grew three inches in six hours.  Wow! And it is the first week in February.  The Allgold also has a new shoot.  I was also very happy with the Anderson Moso and Alfonse Karr I received.  I have created several planting areas on my six acre property that also includes a small grove of P. Vivax I planted earlier.

I look forward to working with you in the future and will send progress photos from time to time.

Very happy with my Boo from You!

Roger,
Just wanted to let you know that we made it home fine, and in record time. Tell Russell and Roger Jr. that they did a great job wrapping the bamboo. We made it without the first tear or even flapping. The "contraption" worked great and I think it will replace the trailer for bamboo missions in the future. Tell Roger Jr. that his idea to make a loop at the supported end of the bamboo worked great to equalize the side to side pull and the load stayed centered all the way home. We drove 75 without even a wiggle from the load.

Please tell Gayle that Beth enjoyed visiting with her very much, and she appreciated a nice warm place to hide out while we loaded the truck. Harper is beautiful and such bright eyes always looking around. She makes us eager for our new grandbaby girl to arrive.

Thanks for the very pleasant, and enjoyable day. I always feel like I've learned more from our walks around your groves than I do from the books I read.

Thanks for the fine plants (as usual) and the free tessellates.

Thought you might like to see some of your bamboo. We got started on the digging today. Eight were dug and we will dig the rest tomorrow. They are under the water now and will be everyday for the next couple weeks. The foliage and root balls will be watered around 10 hours a day. Once the bamboo is stabilized with no more leaf drop the water will be reduced to just every couple days for 2 or 3 hours. By the time it gets to you they will be ready to go into the ground. Winter winds tends to dry out the bamboo so all the water you can provide will really help the bamboo this first winter. I pulled the Sasa Palmata and the 3 gallon size of P. vivax aureocaulis also. We have the larger FS of ‘aureocaulis’, but they are very expensive. The little 3 gallon will do the job and should do well in your climate.

The hand trucks in the photos is for size comparison. They are 5 feet tall with 12 inch tall wheels and the bottom carry plate extends 10 inches.

I received an order of a 3 gallon Red Margin and a P. Viridis from you in July.  Both plants have put up new shoots!  The Red Margin has put up 7 new shoots in August!!  While they are are not that big, it is an encouraging sign that the bamboo is off to a great start.  The P. viridis put up one nice size shoot about 2 ft tall.  I live in south central PA Zone 6b.  Is this normal for the bamboo to shoot this late in the growing season?  I also planted a Moso seedling about 2 years old.  It has produced about 5 Rhizomes about 18 in. long underneath the mulch in less than a month's time.  It is amazing how fast these plants grow!  Is this late growth normal?  How can I prepare for winter to ensure that these amazing plants sustain these awesome growing habits.  I have about 8 inches of mulch consisting of composted manure, hay and grass clippings around them.  It has been quite hot and dry lately, so I have watered them  a few times a week.  Thank you for the healthy plants!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My three gallon Mosos planted last summer have upwards of forty new shoots each so far this spring, after sustaining winter top damage.  I'm anxious to see what this summer and next winter hold for them.  They certainly have a zest for growth.  All the other varieties are looking great; the P. aureosulcata "Spectabilis" plants I've purchased this year look wonderful, and are shooting already.  And it's just days into May.  Thanks again for consistently providing wonderful plants and service.

   Hello Roger:

On Tuesday last week I left on a trip.  There were a few new shoots, but
nothing special.  When I got back on Saturday there were two inches of water
in the rain gauges and new shoots all over the place.  The shoots have kept
coming, and now I count about 120 from the 20 divisions you sent me in 2003
and 2004.  A lot of the shoots measure a third to three-eighths of an inch
at the base.  I dug up one rhizome that had intruded into the kill zone and
it had a lot of buds on it, in addition to the shoots that were showing.
Some of the divisions have a dozen or more shoots, and others have very few.
The 2004 divisions are showing much more rhizome development than the 2003
divisions showed in their second year.  I think maybe last year's heavy
mid-season application of composted chicken manure had something to do with
 it.

Most of the divisions you sent me at the end of February this year have
 new shoots.

Just wanted to drop you a note on my bamboo purchase.
I received my Phyllostachys rubromarginata in a timely
manner and it was in great shape. It seems to be doing well
even though it was quite chilly when I planted it.You guys really know
what you are doing. I have had half hazard results from
other bamboo and other plant type vendors. I would recommend
you to anyone else I knew who wanted bamboo plants.
I hope to do more buying from you as my budget permits,
keep up the good work.

Jeff

Subject: Moso

Hello,

I received my 2 3 gallon moso today and just finished unpacking them.  All I can say is WOW!  They are both much more than I would have expected.  The root balls are huge, the rhizome mass is incredible, and they are both literally EXPLODING with new shoots—I counted around 10 that I could easily see from the top, and several more lower down.  Needless to say I’m THRILLED!  Thanks for the wonderful moso specimens—and for the other species I’ve ordered in the past.  I couldn't be more pleased with the service—and the bamboo--I’ve received from you.  I can really tell that this is a passion for you and not merely a business—very refreshing theses days.

Thanks,
Spence

Hello, yet again,

I’m sorry.  I owe you an apology.  I actually just unpacked the second 3-gallon moso.  I was so excited by the first one, I e-mailed you too soon.  The second one is even more amazing.  It must have close to thirty shoots already!  I can’t wait to get them in the ground (tomorrow).

Thanks again!

My bamboo trees

Hi Everyone:

A few weeks ago I received eight 3 gallon Rubromarginata bamboo plants and planted them in my yard here in Florida.  I just want you to know that I have new shoots around 7 of the 8 trees and two of the shoots are already 5" high.  It's very satisfying watching the trees take root in their new home and spread.  I'm looking forward to watching my grove develop and appreciate the quality of the plants you delivered.

Thanks!

Hello Lewis family,

This is Reed from West Blocton.   I was up a few weeks ago and got some new species from you and enjoyed seeing myself on your website.

I just looked at the Moso seedling I got from you last spring and I counted 21 new shoot coming up today.  Some are 10 feet out from last years growth and a couple appear to be well over an inch in diameter.  I may have stepped on some because I was expecting to see them much closer to the mother seedling.  there are some in close also.

thank you for the wonderful plant.

Thanks for your quick reply as always!  Feel free to use any emails I send to you in your customer page.  I appreciate your explanation about the seedlings.  I figured it hightly unlikely that I would end up with genetically mutated moso in the 60 some that I am raising when a trusted company like yours raised 6,000 without any suprises.  I guess time will tell what species it truly is.  If it does turn out to be a "special moso", you're the first company in mind for it's home.  I know I couldn't raise moso to it's fullest maturity  here in NJ, so I'd be happy to bring it your way on one of my trips South.  Out of any business I've ever dealt with, regardless of trade, I trust yours the most.  Thanks again for your professional and personal attention!

Roger Sr. -- Just arrived today. Looks great! In fact I potted up in a #5 pot
since it's so big. Attached is a pic. I took it outside for the photo but
it's back inside until spring. Good timing with the delivery too because
the Arctic chill is coming here this weekend.

I'll attach another photo, cropped a bit closer to the foliage.

The 1st thing jumped out looking at the rubro you sent is the large foliage.
Biggest leaves I've seen on any Phyllostachys I have, except maybe my Moso
seedlings which still have giant foliage.

I'll definitely keep you posted on how it goes. I'll likely take some more
photos indoors since outdoors is quite inhospitable right now.

Subject: Bamboo report from the frozen north.

Dear Friends,

Now that we have had some cold weather up here in Michigan, I thought I'd
send along a report on the beautiful bamboo you sent me home with last
summer.

Although it was 62 degrees here on Dec. 31, we have had one or more nights
down to -10 degrees and one or more nights down to -12.5. I'm happy to
report that all the bamboo you sold me is alive and well and still looking
very green and beautiful! All of it!

We got about 7" of snow before Christmas which is almost entirely gone now.
I missed a great opportunity to photograph the beautiful green bamboo
against the white background. If I still have green bamboo when the next
snow arrives I will attempt to get photographs. I'm sure other prospective
bamboo buyers up here in the great white north would be very interested to
see some photos of snow covered green bamboo from your groves on your web
site. If possible I'll bring some photos to Savannah if I don't miss
another opportunity like the one that just escaped me.

Thanks again for showing us all such a great time at your BEAUTIFUL place
there this summer. Some of that warm weather would be really welcome up
here right now!

Hope to see you all in Savannah.

Very best regards!

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to drop you a note letting you know much we appreciate all the work you put into providing us with the Henon Giant Gray for the Rave Theater Complex in Hurst, Texas. We dropped a pretty good size order in your lap with a very small window for delivery since we were on a very strict completion timetable. Not only did you have to immediately start digging for a sufficient curing time, but of all things you had hurricane Ivan bearing down directly on Alabama, just a few days away. Roger, we couldn't be more pleased with every point of contact we had with your company including the pinpoint delivery a few weeks ago. The bamboo was excellent and everyone involved was extremely happy with the quality of the bamboo, including height and caliper. It already makes an impressive statement against the massive walls. Sky's the limit now. We had to crane all of the bamboo over to the planters and managed to plant all but about ten that Monday you delivered. Look forward to working with you guys in the future, but I can't imagine how you'll be able to improve on quality and product the next time around. Good luck.

I'll post some pictures on my website end of this week www.greenearthlandscape.com

I planted the MOSO that ordered from you Two days after I received it and have been
watering it every day and it looks OUTSTANDING the leaves are nice and green and I could almost swear (not sure) there is already new foliage on it. Also I drove a Steel fence post down beside it so my wife won't run over it with the lawn mower like she did my Pigskin I ordered from you last year.

Thanks for making the MOSO available to us I am sure there is a lot
of work involved in doing this. There are some other people selling MOSO I have even seen it on Ebay but you are the only people that I TRUST to order my Bamboo from because of your Outstanding reputation which I think you have earned from your many years of selling Bamboo.

Thanks Again!!

Subject: Follow up

Hi Roger, Thought you might like a follow up. I bought the P aureosulcata three years ago and trucked it here to Butte.

First winter, we got it under cover late...Jan 1...and had many days of zero degree to 5-10 below weather, not windy. All but two of the plants survived. About 20% of the plants lived but tops all died and new growth came up. About 50% of plants lived, but burn was visible...culms turned a purple color. About 30% of plants had minor leaf burn.

This last winter (second year) we got them covered in November. I bought a 60 x30 ft heavy plastic and built a frame, basically covering them with a greenhouse. Also ran steam pipe into the ground, which rarely turned on. We keep root temp about 30-40 degrees in the winter. You might recall, Butte is Zone 3. I also bought a propane heater, and when we get our week or so of 30-40 below weather, I turn that on to keep the temp in the "greenhouse" just about 5 degrees.

So the bamboo over wintered much better this year, and whereas some of the new growth from first summer planting died in the winter, all survived this winter. Bamboo sits in a hollow, with about 6 ft of a dirt berm surrounding it, so the ground and plastic cover really holds the heat and I don't really have to spend much money keeping the temperature adequate.

I have a natural pond right next to the bamboo and we caught dragonflys for the pond to keep the mosquito's down. They seem to like the bamboo, and watching them dart in among the bamboo with the hummingbirds using the feeders in the bamboo is really quite a sight, one I never thought I would see in Montana.

I had reasonable growth the first year, pretty good growth last year, and I think this summer the grove is really going to take off.

I'm leaving for a long trip to Africa in May, be back in July...I'll send you a picture later this summer.

Subject: bamboo progress

Roger,
Just a quick note to let you know how excited I am with my bamboo's progress.  It's late August as I write this, and the several three gallon P. rubromarginata that I planted in October are putting up new shoots, and there are rhizomes intermittently visible in several places up to 6 feet from the original plants!  A P. rubromarginata planted three weeks ago has put up 3 new shoots since planting, again a 3 gallon plant.  The P. heterocycla pubescens (Moso) 3 and 2 gallon plants have lovely top growth from culms that grew after planting this spring, and there are rhizomes digging themselves outward in the soil already.  A 3 gallon P. aurea "Koi" planted several months ago has put up three new culms, two of them just in the last two weeks.  The P. viridis you shipped me (one Robert Young, one original recipe) are looking very healthy; the 3 gallon P. viridis had a large rhizome curled up around the root ball as shipped (thank you for preserving it), and is no doubt doing its thing.  I am so thrilled with all the plants you've shipped me, and am already getting immense enjoyment from them.  I am in the mountains of western Virginia; my site has full sun, good soil, and wind.  I am watering when my work schedule allows.  Thanks for doing what you do.

Best,
Dirk

P.S.  P. nigra "Henon" is likewise thriving; dense foliage topside, one new culm, and at least one visible rhizome headed for new territory; who knows what else is going on underground, which is one of the fascinating aspects of the plant-- it keeps surprising you.  I have grown transplanted bamboo (P. aureosulcata and P. aurea, I'm fairly certain) before, on a property I subsequently sold, and that was a fun experience for me.  But this is better.  The gorgeous varieties you offer, and the healthy, vigorous plants I've received from you, have really made this process a joy.  And these plants will continue to give joy for the rest of my life and beyond.  I've even got my children, who are very young, watching the culm and rhizome growth.  Who knows what lifelong interests that may generate.

Thanks again,  Dirk

Hello Gayle, Roger, and Roger Jr.

Thought i'd send you some pictures of the bamboo i bought from you in a
couple of years ago. During the first winter everything died above ground
but as you will see from the pictures everything came back very strong. the
rhizomes are going everywhere. i'm in the midst of digging a small ditch
around my patch so i'll see if any rhizomes attempt to cross it.
most of my plants were #1 viridis i got from you in april '99. i bought
your "choice selection" along with the viridis. i've been very pleased with
everything you've sent. although i was a little worried over the past
winter when everything died above ground. ( I live in indianapolis).
the rubromarginata is the only one that survived above ground this past
winter. The Vivax, and the Madake are fast becoming my favorites. Their
dark green large leaves are beautiful. i can't wait until next growing
season to see what they sprout up!
thank you again for your help and bamboo! this is my first house i've been
able to plant any bamboo at so i'm loving everything.
i also have some phylo. nigra started and two clumpers. bamb. tuilo. and
bamb. bambusoides? i think it's called. Don't know if they'll survive the
winter or not. i'm going to cover them in the fall leaves.

well this has turned out to be a long email. i'll keep sending pictures
each year of your bamboo's progress up here. Thanks again! I've loved
every minute of it.

Lewis Bamboo Just a note to say the B. multiplex is doing outstandingly well for a first year. One of the clumps has had 17 shoots so far and seems willing to produce more. The latest are 3/8" in diameter and now 9ft tall and still growing. The P nigra each produced a couple of good healthy shoots and are doing well. I'm looking forward to next spring. The P. bambusoides also produced shoots and is healthy but the drought is a bit harder on them. They are, however, healthy with regular watering and should do well next spring. I'm very happy with the quality of your bamboo and looking forward to trying other species in the future. In particular we are building a new hospital here and I've been talking to the architects and landscapers about a bamboo grove and park like area for the campus as a quite and restful area the patients and families can use during their stay. If they buy it I'll be in touch.

Very friendly and was interested in my needs rather than just making a sale. You did such a good job of packing, I'm glad you don't wrap my Christmas presents. My wife says I'm a plant nut, but I really enjoy them and have been interested in bamboo for a long time, but did not know where to get it (until now). Thanks ever so much and you haven't heard the last from me yet.

The bamboo multiplex we purchased from you earlier this year is doing very well despite the drought this summer and lately the rains from Dennis and Floyd. Thank you for providing such high quality plant.

Just thought I'd let you know the bamboo I ordered back in February is doing great. Most of the plants (10 viridis, 1 Vivax, 1 MEDAKE, and 1 Rubromarginata) have sent up new culms, and are now sending out a few new rhizomes. I can't wait to see what comes up next spring. Also I'm curious as to how they will handle the Indianapolis winter. Thanks again for the new plants.

Roger, I would be pleased for you to use the pictures on your web site. I expect that next season the bamboo will look even better. I am a satisfied customer. By the way, if you want to see more of our 22nd floor place (only the inside, I am afraid), check out the Dec-Jan issue of Southern Accents. We will be in it. Your bamboo fits right in.

I purchased my bamboo online from Lewis Bamboo Groves. Their web page is quite extensive and details what conditions each type will grow in.

I planted mine March 20th and already have 9 new shoots. I am very happy with this company (small, family owned). They answered all my questions and have been wonderful. The plants were packaged upright and arrived perfectly.

Based solely on my experience, I would highly recommend them.
