Phyllostachys aurea
flavenscens-inversa

Average mature size 1.75" x 27'   Hardy to  0 F
Aggressive in full sun

Get this one and you will have something different. A  collector species and supplies are limited. This one is often over looked by many gardeners. Even standing alone as a specimen or container planting it is beautiful. The emerald green canes have bright lemon yellow stripe within the sulcus grooves. The auricles and oral setae are absent from the sheaths. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms with its colored internodes.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

A rare collector species and supplies are very limited. Right the opposite of ' flavenscens inversa', it is a eye catcher. The golden yellow canes have a dark green sulcus groove. Its highly decorative sulcus groove alternates perfectly. If  you ever see a large specimen of this one, it will set you back. The auricles and oral setae are absent from the sheaths. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms with its colored internodes.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory'

Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory'

'LEOPARD or  SNAKESKIN BAMBOO'

Plant introduction number (PI) into the U.S. 77258

Average mature size 3" x 50'      Hardy to -4 F
 Sun to Part Shade

Rare collector's bamboo

From China this species is a  larger relative of 'Black'  with canes  that develop spots of blackish/brown coloration. The canes never turn completely solid black, but have a spotted 'snakeskin' appearance. This is one of a kind bamboo. The dark spots usually appear in the second year age of new culms (canes). It is as fast growing as the mother form Henon 'giant gray'.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Megurochiku'

'BLACK STRIPE'

Average mature size  3.5" x 54'      Hardy to 0 F
Sun to Part Shade

Beautiful collector rare species with its black stripe on gray/ green canes. I have two plantings of this species and I believe the site with more sun light is going to have the best striping characteristics. The culm sheath have wavy blades with prominent oral setae, auricles and ligules. Likes most all planting sites, but I would recommend full sun. The wood is of high quality and used by many craftsmen.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis'
'GREEN STRIPE VIVAX
'

VERY RARE

Average mature size  5" x  70'      Hardy to -5 F
 Sun to Part Shade

A rare collector species and has not been in the U.S. long. Therefore, not many groves have been established long enough to furnish nice divisions.  Careful on your source with this one. This giant vivax has giant bright yellow canes, with occasional dark green stripes. The oral setae and auricles are absent from the culm sheaths. There is also white pin striping on many of the green leaves. As always with giant timber species, it is difficult to produce small 2 and 3 gallon sizes. That is why availability is very limited.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Low Privacy Screening

        Average mature size  . 5 " x   8 '      Hardy to   -5 F
Prefers Shaded Site

This rare bamboo has the distinct characteristic of having solid canes. The dark green leaves can be up to 10 inches in length. My groves are  at 4 feet in height, but I do expect one site  to reach 8 to 10 feet tall. In our climate zone this species will grow to  over 10 feet with 4 or more hours of direct sun light. It has very lush foliage providing complete privacy from one foot to 8 feet off the ground.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.

Shaded site

Very rare species similar to the  P. pygmaeus typical form, but much larger in height reach 6 feet or taller.  Much more cold hardy and very rare.

Less than 10 growers nation wide even have this species.  A one gallon container went for over $300 five years ago at the National ABS meeting.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6  and warmer.

Pleioblastus simonii variegatus

Pleioblastus simonii variegatus

This very rare bamboo grows like the typical form of simonii, but has a very unusual leaf coloration. Some of the leaves are variegated with a white stripe and some are solid green. This characteristic can often be seen on the same branch with some variegated and some not. This species is not wide spread and is sought by many bamboo enthusiast.

PERFECT BAMBOO FOR INDOOR CONTAINER GROWTH

This rare collector bamboo is spectacular with its swollen internodes. The persistent culm (cane) sheaths can be peeled away to reveal this characteristic making it the center of your garden setting. We have reports back from a customers in zone 6 that this one will remain evergreen to -8 degrees F. when established plantings are well mulched.

Arundinaria  funghomii

Average mature size   1.75 " x  30'   Hardy to  0 F
 Prefers Sunny Site

This hard to find species is very attractive with the new canes having a gray coloring then turning a red coloration. It is going to be one of my favorites with this color culms and the very dense foliage on multiple branches at each node.  It reaches 4 to 6 feet in cold climates, but much taller here in the southern states.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 6 and warmer.
