Along this area we usually keep several 30 gallon sizes of around 20 species for customers to look at.  Species such as 'Black', 'Koi', 'Tanakae', 'Spectabilis', 'Aureocaulis', 'Giant Gray', 'Bory', 'Megurochiku', Flexuosa and others  are currently on display.

Everyone needs a pot of bamboo, maybe not as large as the one
shown below. This is a 60 gallon container of P. nigra Henon 'Giant Gray'
which can grow over 65 feet tall. This size container weight is around
800 pounds.

Below are 15 gallon sizes. These weigh from 100 to 150 pounds each
and vary from 8 to over 20 feet tall depending on the species. Our
average size field specimen will be 8 to 12 feet tall. It will have a 60 to
80 pound root ball. The height and weight vary on each bamboo, this all
 depends on the species and the length of time the division has been dug.

how to plant. These are single cane 'Golden' field divisions.

We have created an easy chart based on mileage and weight limits. We can deliver up to 1000 miles from Birmingham, Alabama. Please take time to review the delivery charts located toward the end of the page if you are considering these large bamboo specimens. We have listed some average weights and cane heights to help in your decision. Our inventory turns over fast so sizes may vary depending on sales.

We decline to ship commercial freight.  In the past our valuable products were
 mishandled by large trucking companies so we personally deliver our bamboo now.

We have some divisions over 30 feet in height with root balls weighing over 200 pounds. The 'wholesale specials' will be from 8 to 16 feet in height range and are our standard Field Specimen Size. These will have root balls in the 18 to 24 inch range and from 60 to 100 pounds.  Each division will be in burlap and ready to plant. These  divisions will provide you with instant beauty of a privacy screen or jump start a grove. We carefully hand dig each field division finding the main or mother rhizome (root). The more of this mother rhizome we get, the more buds your bamboo will have, therefore producing many new canes the following year.

 

If the order is large enough we can deliver up to
1000 miles from Birmingham, Alabama.

  

  

Many growers go the easy way and use large mechanical diggers which damage the bamboo. We treat your bamboo like we were digging it for ourselves. Carefully digging and lifting each division by hand. It is then balled and burlap, carried to our  shaded holding area for stabilization. Some foliage is removed to balance the water
uptake with the reduced root mass after digging. Newly dug divisions are watered daily and are usually ready for transport in 4 to 6 weeks. We transport these large field divisions and do not use commercial trucking. We have seen the way plants are treated by some freight lines and will not expose our bamboo to that type of transport. For the past 9 years Red Margin has been our number one selling bamboo for our mail
 order customers. That tells you it is unmatched for a number of reasons. It ranks second in wood quality for hardness and straightness. It handles a variety of soil conditions and does better than any of our species in windy sites. Across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio it has reached 35 feet in height and near 3 inches in diameter. In the warm south it has been measured at over 60 feet in height. The further north you go the shorter it grows in height, but produces a thick grove of privacy. It is one of the few that does well in shaded or poorly drained planting sites where others struggle to survive. In zone 5 we have customers reporting that it has retained 80% of its winter foliage at -12 degrees F.

An extensive government study done by the University of Auburn agriculture  department showed it to be superior in culm/rhizome production. The university
 tested twenty seven species over a thirty year period and found it be dramatically
 superior over the other bamboo tested in the genus.  We have found this species to be
a healthy and strong grower.  It is one of the best species if you want to have a
 bamboo grove or screen fast.
In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 50 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 20 to 30 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 5 expect mature size canes to be 12 to 18 feet in height.

For medium height bamboo
'Golden Bamboo'

 For a limited time, if you purchase 10 or more we are
 offering these large divisions for $80 each. These will
average 8 to 12 feet in height and weigh around 60
pounds each.

This remains one of our best screening bamboo and is cold hardy to 0 degrees F. 'Golden' can reach mature sizes of over 30 feet in height by 2 inches in diameter here in the south eastern U.S. We can custom dig tall specimens of this species in the 18 foot height. The prices on these will be determined by several factors such as number of canes, root ball weight and total height custom ordered.
In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 16 feet in height.
Not recommended for colder climate zones such as zones 5.

Beautiful 'Black' Bamboo-
Phyllostachys nigra
 'Black'

We currently offer this highly sought after ornamental bamboo for $125 each when 10 or more are ordered. These will average 8 to 12 feet in height.

Below are several photos of our 'Black' holding area with 15 gallon sizes available. Prices vary from $125 to $150 depending on number of canes and heights.



 Below 'Black' in 30 gallon size containers weighing over 200 pounds each.
When available these 30 gallon sizes are $250 each and can be over
 18 feet in height with multiple canes.


The legendary 'Black' bamboo is native to Taiwan and China. It is top hardy
to -4 degrees F. The new canes emerge emerald green each Spring and then
turn to an ebony black within two years. Under good conditions this species
will be producing many one and two inch diameter canes in under five years.
Small orders of these large containers can be picked up here at our nursery.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 and 8 expect mature size canes to be over 30 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect  size canes to be 12 feet in height with moderate
top damage during winter months. 
This species is not recommended for climate zone 5.

For large timber bamboo
'Pigskin'
Phyllostachys viridis

Over the year we have dug and delivered some giant divisions of this great bamboo. These sizes contributed to the  herniation of two Lumbar Disc for which Roger Sr. had surgery on in 2005.


 

Above and below show some 200 plus pound root balls that went down to the University of Alabama area.
 

Currently we are offering specimens in the 8 to 12 foot height
range for $90 each when you purchase 10 or more.
One of our fastest species of bamboo to size up. Under good conditions this species will be producing many 3 inch diameter canes in under five years. This species is evergreen and cold hardy to -5 degrees F. Foliage turns a beautiful golden during the late summer and remains that way until the following Spring when new green leaves appear. It can reach maximum sizes of 47 feet in height by 3.25 inches in diameter. These will average 12 to 16 feet in height and weigh around 75 pounds each.
In USDA Climate Zone 7 and 8 expect mature size canes to be over 45 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be over 20  feet in height with
some top damage during very cold winters.




-For Giant timber bamboo-
'Giant Gray'

 Phyllostachys nigra Henon
This large timber bamboo is the "mother" form of P. nigra 'Black' bamboo. We have sold and done follow up studies on 'Giant Gray'/font> in several areas of the country. It has adapted well and reached over 3 inches diameter canes in USDA Climate Zone 6. In Cherokee, North Carolina it has reached almost mature sizes in the & past 10 years. Giant Gray is growing well in Las Vegas, Nevada and even the Mirage Hotel is growing this beautiful bamboo and in 2005 it had reached 1.5 inch diameter by 24 feet in height.








We have some great 15 gallon sizes as shown above for $125 each. These have several canes and are in the 8 to 12 foot height range.



This true giant is beautiful and reaches large sizes in 5 to 8 years.. This species is evergreen and is cold hardy to at least 0 degrees F. It can reach maximum sizes of 65 feet in height by 4.5 inches in diameter.



Above and below are 30 gallon sizes. The 30 gallon sizes range from 15 to 20 feet in height and are $225 each.

We have the biggest bamboo ready to go in 15 gallon sizes. Click on  the link above to see more pictures of this giant bamboo.

  

Our well established 15 gallon containers are $150 each.

Our 30 gallon containers are great pots that can start a grove instantly - $250 each.

I recommend Moso for the southeastern U.S. in climate zones 7 and 8 only.

It does not  reach mature sizes in middle and western Texas so I do not usually
 recommend it farther west than eastern Texas.

'Yellow Groove'

 or more of the Field Dug Divisions. Our 3 gallon
sizes are $50. For $30 more you get 5 times the size
of your starter division.
One of our top picks for cold areas in need of privacy screening. I have measured this bamboo in our area at 46 feet X 2.6 inches in diameter. We have customers growing this bamboo all over North America in areas such as Butte, Montana and parts of Minnesota. Yellow Groove is from Jiangsu and Zhejiang in east China and has been in the U.S. close to 100 years now. It is doing very well in the Missouri Botanical Gardens, University of Minnesota Arboretum, Logan, Iowa and Grand Island, Nebraska. One of our customers in zone 3b/4a where temperatures have dropped to -30 degrees F. told us his dies back each Winter and in the Spring puts up new canes in the 6 to 8 foot height range from his 5 year old planting.


At the Denver Zoo, elevation 5000 climate zone 5, their planting of Yellow Groove
 after 12 years maintains a 10 to 12 foot height X .75 inch diameter. This is most likely
 the mature size for Yellow Groove at their zone 5 location.
Under good conditions this species will be producing many 2 inch diameter canes in under five years. This species is evergreen and cold hardy to -15 degrees F. Larger sizes can be custom ordered, the price is determined by height and number of canes. We can supply these in the 16 to 18 foot height range.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 expect mature size canes to be over 40 feet in height.
 In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 18 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 5 expect mature size canes to be 12 to 14 feet in height.
 In USDA Climate Zone 4 expect mature size canes to be 8 feet in height..


Phyllostachys bissetii
 'Bissetii'
Phyllostachys bissetii

 These are $95 each if you purchase 10 or more. These plants will be in the 8 to 12 foot height range.

This species is perfect for privacy screening in the 12 to 18 foot height range.
It is a vigorous grower with dark gray green canes. This one likes most any
 site and will grow in a wide variety of soil conditions. The wind doesn't bother
 it at all. Our personal customers report this one does better than P. nuda
the so called 'most cold hardy' temperate bamboo. Foliage handles wind
 chill factors much  better than nuda. It grows in the coldest areas of zone 5
 and is hardy to -15 degrees F. At the Denver Zoo, elevation 5000 feet, 12 years after planting it produces 12 feet high canes each Spring. This is most likely & the mature size for bissetii at their zone 5 location.


Above photo shows bissetii running along both sides of this road. Note the shorter mature height of this bamboo in this colder zone 5 location. Perfect for cooler climate zone for applications under power lines or anywhere there are height restrictions.

One of our best picks for bamboo privacy screening. This planting above is 4
years old and has hundreds of 18 foot canes. Note how canes under 2 inch diameter have full foliage nearly to ground level. This provides excellent privacy screening with this giant timber bamboo. I have measured this bamboo in our area at 55 feet and right at 4 inches in diameter.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 & 8  expect mature size canes to be over 50 feet in height.
In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 12 to 18 feet in height.
